Tooth Pitting and Spalling
Progressive surface damage begins at gear tooth contact points under inadequate film thickness, caused by contaminated oil, insufficient viscosity, or extreme load cycling. Pitting initiates as microscopic craters on the dedendum; as load repeats, cracks propagate subsurface until chunks of tooth material shear away. This cascades: debris circulates through the gearbox, damaging bearings and seals, and imbalanced gear geometry forces catastrophic tooth fracture. EGR removes damaged gears for metallurgical analysis, measures remaining tooth profiles on CMM, replaces gears with precision-ground blanks that match OEM module and pressure angle, and renews all seals and lubricant to eliminate recontamination.
