Gear Tooth Pitting & Spalling
Micropitting initiates under cyclic contact stress when lubrication film breaks down or when bearings wear, allowing shaft deflection that distorts tooth contact zones. Initial surface fatigue progresses to shallow spalls, then deep material loss as subsurface cracks propagate. Early warning signs are audible grinding noise, vibration increase, and metallic wear particles in oil. EGR performs gear tooth imaging and wear particle analysis to confirm pitting depth, then replaces the damaged gear set with precision-matched bevel gears and corrects any bearing wear that caused shaft misalignment.
